"In a roller derby team, there exists a spectrum of heights, weights, natural abilities and existing or gained fitness levels. Each skater on a team utilises the strengths they have – whether it be a speedy, explosive jammer compared to a more powerful, offensive style jammer, or a super-agile blocker compared to a powerhouse blocker. It is not therefore relevant to deem a transgender skater ineligible for inclusion in roller derby on the basis of what stage of gender transition they are at or how their physical body presents." - UKRDA Transgender Policy, Item 12.
We also support the Trans Girls Can initiative, celebrating trans women who embrace health and fitness worldwide. Any self-identifying woman can join us as a skater, and people of any gender identity can join us as non skating officials and referees. Please see our Statement of Inclusion for more information.
We were angered by news this week that two of our members experienced alleged discrimination in their private lives because of their gender identity. One was deadnamed by her GP during a consultation; the other denied entry into a club that purports to be gay-friendly, owing to their gender expression.
Such alleged discrimination, transphobia and homophobia is unacceptable. As allies we have a responsibility to support LGBTQ members of our community, and speak up where we see discrimination occurring. The burden should not be on the victim alone to defend themselves - we all need to voice that this treatment will not be tolerated.
The Wakey Wheeled Cats Roller Derby League and Sheffield roller derby communities have joined together to protest the treatment of Taylor at the hands of the Fanny and Bacardi club in Wakefield. To learn more about the incident and lend your support to Taylor, you can follow the hashtag #fannyandbacardi on Twitter. And you can also lend your support when Taylor plays with the Vagine Regime UK at Liverpool Roller Birds bout in 2 weeks!
