But when a couple of our training sessions were moved out of Hillsborough Sports centre as there were to be blood donation sessions, this got me thinking - as a team we should give blood.
If you know about roller derby you'll know that many of the girls and boys have tattoos, and that fitting blood donation into a tattoo schedule can be tricky (you have to wait 4 months after a tattoo or piercing before donating), but I was sure that we could get together a group of us.
I put a call out on our FB pages, and I'm pleased to say that 12 girls and 3 boys responded.
So, last night we all met at the student union to give an arm full each. I think the nurses were a bit shocked to see us all turn up in full kit (pads, helmets and skates)! The blood service had sent someone to take our photo with one of their banners, and had asked that
we arrive in full kit (we took our skates off after the photo).
A couple of us hadn't given before, or were returning donors after a break of a few years - one of the girls was convinced she'd cry (she didn't, and not I'm not saying who!), and another was worried about fainting (she didn't).
Giving blood is so important, especially at a time when donations are down (now), and honestly it doesn't hurt - and I'm not just saying that as I'm a fearless Rollergirl!
